Scope

This standard specifies the terms and definitions, test substance information, method overview, test preparation, test, quality control, data and report for estimating the adsorption coefficient of chemicals in soil and sewage sludge by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This standard is applicable to substances that are chemically stable during the test period, especially those difficult to test by other methods, such as volatile substances, substances whose concentration cannot be analyzed and detected due to poor water solubility, and chemical substances with strong affinity to adsorption test vessels. It is also applicable to mixture systems that cannot be completely separated into elution bands (the upper and lower limits of lgKoc of the test mixture should be given). The applicable adsorption coefficient (lgKoc) range of this standard is 1.5 to 5.0. This standard is not applicable to substances that can react with the HPLC stationary phase or mobile phase, substances that can interact with certain inorganic substances in a special way (e.g., forming complexes with clay mineral bases), and surfactants, inorganic substances, medium-strong acids and bases.

Application Summary AI generated

Environmental testing laboratories and chemical safety assessors use this standard to rapidly estimate the adsorption coefficient of chemicals in soil and sewage sludge via HPLC. It is especially useful for volatile, poorly water-soluble, or otherwise difficult-to-test substances, providing critical data for environmental risk assessment. The standard matters because it offers a fast, cost-effective alternative to traditional batch equilibrium methods while maintaining comparable reliability.

AI Summary AI generated

This standard specifies a method for estimating the adsorption coefficient of chemicals in soil and sewage sludge using HPLC. It is applicable to chemically stable substances, especially those that are volatile, poorly water-soluble, or difficult to test by other methods. The method establishes a calibration curve between lgKoc and capacity factor lgk' of reference substances, then estimates the adsorption coefficient of the test substance by measuring its retention time. The standard details test preparation, procedures, quality control, and data processing, and provides reference substance lists and applicable substance examples. The method is rapid and effective, with results typically within ±0.5 lgKoc of batch equilibrium values.
