This standard specifies the design and qualification requirements for ensuring the physical and electrical independence of Class 1E safety-related equipment and circuits in nuclear power plants. It is applied to prevent common-cause failures between redundant safety systems, such as reactor protection and emergency core cooling systems, by defining separation distances, barriers, and isolation criteria.
